Class Instruction

The Marine Resources Library is committed to assisting students and practicing marine science researchers with the development of information literacy skills. The information landscape is steadily evolving and the library provides access to scholarly publications in both traditional (print) and online formats. The search, discovery, and access of quality academic scholarship requires the researcher to possess a set of skills in utilizing a variety of tools and services available through the library.

The librarian is happy to offer a variety of class instruction sessions to assist with the development of skills:

  • Basic library orientation session for new students and employees (introductory)
  • Targeted assignment-based library instruction for students (intermediate)
  • Online tools and services for researchers (intermediate)
  • Custom sessions as needed

Library instruction for students beyond basic orientation is usually most fruitful when provided in conjunction with a specific research assignment. The librarian will tailor the instruction session to target specific assignment objectives and will offer activities and demonstrations that will equip students for successful completion of their goals.

Sessions can be taught in the library conference room (maximum 20 attendees) or at other locations on the Fort Johnson or College of Charleston campuses. Two weeks notice is required for scheduling an instruction session due to the amount of preparation that is made in crafting a quality session.
